What do you teach at HIUC?
（HIUCで担当の授業は？）
I teach ESL classes to prepare students with basic English skills， and some general education courses including Freshman Composition and Film Studies to prepare them for higher academic skills in college.
（基礎英語のESLと英作文や映画研究などの一般教養を担当しています。）

                                      
Please tell us about your academic career and job career.
（職務経歴を教えて下さい。）
I have been teaching English at HIUC for nearly ten years now! Before that， I also taught English at several conversation schools， and before that， I worked as a reservation staff for an airline company.
（HIUC10年間英語講師をしています。その前は英会話学校で英語を教えたり、航空会社の予約セクションで勤務していたことがあります。）

The clue or secret of success is to learn second and third languages.
（外国語を習得する秘訣とは？）
Learning a language is like learning anything else， the piano， baseball， cooking or dancing; you have to practice， practice， practice!  Speak， make mistakes， learn from the mistakes，speak again and get better and better and better!
（外国語を学ぶことはピアノ、野球、料理やダンスを学ぶことと同じように「練習」をすることが大切です。英語を話し、「間違い」をし、そして間違いから学ぶ。それを繰り返すことで上達していきます。）


What is important to be an international citizen?
（「国際人」になるために大切なことは？）
Challenging!  Confident!  Communicative!  Curious!  Committed!  5C！
（挑戦し、自信を持ち、コミュニケーション能力を高め、好奇心を持ち、そして自分がやっていることに熱意を持って取り組むことです。）

           
Message to the students who'd like to study overseas.
（留学を希望する学生へメッセージをお願いします。）
Studying in a foreign country is definitely a challenging and rewarding experience!  It offers you much more than just a homestay program or a summer trip!  The more you are prepared， the more enriching the experience will be!  If you're planning to study abroad， start getting ready now and make sure you come back as a successful student!!
（外国で勉強することは挑戦であり、とても貴重な経験になります。これは短期滞在や海外旅行では得られない経験です。渡航前に準備をすればするほど、留学先で有益な経験をするでしょう。今からしっかりと準備をして、留学を成功させましょう！）

今回はHIUCの名物講師Jerry Martin先生にインタビュー！

What do you teach at HIUC？
（HIUCで何を教えていますか？）
I teach mainly ESL classes， such as speaking， writing， and grammar. However， I also teach several general education (GE) classes， which I really enjoy. These GE classes include， introduction to business， introduction to economics， introduction to psychology， and a speech class.　
（スピーキング、ライティング、グラマーなどを中心としたESL。それと経営学、経済学心理学などの一般教養だよ。）

Please tell us about your academic career and job careeｒ. 
（今までのキャリアを簡単に教えて下さい。）
I have been teaching in Japan for about 15 years.  I have taught at all levels covering a wide range of age groups (2 year-olds to 90 year-olds).  I have a B.S. degree in liberal studies from the University of Central Florida， an MBA in global management from the University of Phoenix， and I am currently working on my doctorate degree in education with a specialization in curriculum design and instruction.  I love education. I was in the United States Coast Guard for 4 years and enjoyed the experience very much.  I have run several small businesses in the past (importing company， homestay， and English conversation schools) and enjoy the challenges of being an entrepreneur.  Future goals include attending law school and setting up a consulting company fulltime.
（日本で英語を教えて、もう15年になるなぁ。生徒は2歳から90歳までいろいろなレベルを教えたよ。セントラルフロリダ大学を卒業し、フェニックス大学でMBA（修士課程）を取得。今は博士課程でカリキュラムデザインと教授法の研究をしているよ。教育が天職なんだ。
社会経験としてはアメリカで沿岸警備隊員として4年間働いた。それから企業家になることを志して輸入関係の会社や英会話学校をやってみたこともあった。今は法律を勉強してコンサルティング会社を設立することが夢なんだ。）


The clue or secret of success to learn second， third languages.
（外国語を習得する秘訣は？）
I have studied five languages， but only speak one…ENGLISH!  So the secret is to not be like me!  You have to be aggressive， take responsibility for your progress， attend classes everyday， do your homework， and take risks and challenges in the classroom and in front of your peers.  Never give up! Staying motivated is a big challenge in learning any subject， but is especially important when learning a second language.
（まいったなぁ。5カ国語を勉強してみたけど、いやいや難しい。。。外国語を身につける秘訣は僕のようにやらないことかな（笑）。上達するために日々努力をすること、毎日授業に出席し、宿題をこなし教室でも友達の前でも恥ずかしがらず常にチャレンジすることだね。どんな科目においても常にモチベーションを上げておくことは重要。特に外国語を学ぶときにはね。）

What is important to be an international student?
（国際人になるために大切なことは何ですか？）
Keeping an open mind is essential to having a successful experience abroad. Some things will seem strange at first， but over time you will come to understand them. Be outgoing and join as many activities as you can. You will make many friends this way! Don’t be afraid to ask for help! You may experience homesickness or arguments with your friends….this is natural! Talk with your teachers， counselors， and other friends. Everyone will be willing to help you.
（海外でいい経験をしたいのであれば絶対偏見を持たないことだ。最初はあれ？なんか変だって思うことも後でだんだん理解できるようになって来るからね。できるだけ多くのアクティビティーに参加することで友達もたくさんできる！ホームシックや友達との喧嘩で落ち込んだり、悩んだりした時は先生や事務所のスタッフや友達に助けを求めることも大事だよ。みんな喜んでヘルプするよ。

　　　　　　　　　
Message to the students who ‘d like to study overseas.
（留学したい学生へ.メッセージをお願いします。）
I envy your challenging spirit! When you go abroad， you need to try to interact with the local people as quickly and often as possible. While hanging out with your Japanese friends may seem comfortable， you will be defeating your purpose of going abroad. Don’t waste this wonderful opportunity that your parents have given you. Do your best to stay positive; remember that positive things come from positive thinking!
「海外へ行こう」というチャレンジ精神をうらやましく思うよ！海外に行ったらできるだけその土地の人と仲良くしようとする行動力が大切だ。日本人の友達とばかりいれば安心だろうけど、海外にいる意味がなくなってしまう。ご両親が与えてくれた貴重な機会を無駄にしてはいけない。できる限りポジティブでいることだ。ポジティブシンキング（前向きな考え方）でいることが幸運をよぶんだ！）
