  Christmas: Part 1

G’day, my name is Fiona and I am an Australian living and working in Japan.
Since Christmas is coming soon, today I would like to talk to you about how
we celebrate it in Australia.

Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, God’s son. We celebrate it
on December 25th, but actually he was born over 2000 years ago, so we don’t
know the exact date. When Jesus was born, three wise men brought presents
to him, so now we have a tradition of giving presents to each other on
Christmas day.

People who believe in the Christian religion usually go to church the night before
Christmas or on Christmas Day and pray and sing many Christmas songs to
celebrate Jesus’ birth. For example, do you know ‘Silent night’ and
‘Joy to the World’?

Many of the Christmas songs use uncommon or old English that is hard to
understand. For example:
“We wish you a merry Christmas.
Good tidings we bring, to you and your kin.”

This means “We have good news for you and your family”

I hope you enjoyed learning about Christmas in Australia.

I will teach you more next time, so Ooroo (see you) until then!
