High School Lifestyles - Part 3
G’day, my name is Fiona and I am an Australian living and working in Japan.
Today, I would like to discuss with you one final difference between Japanese
and Australian schools,
the university entrance system! Japanese students take as many as 12 subjects in their final year of high school
to prepare for university entrance exams. Then they decide which universities
and faculties they want to try to enter, and take an exam at each one separately.
I was surprised to learn it costs as much as 30,000 yen per exam.
However, in Australia we do not have to sit an exam at each university or faculty
that we want to enter. In the final year of high school we take between 4 and 6
pre-university subjects, and then all the high school students in a state all take
the same exams in these subjects at their schools. For example, I took Japanese,
Maths, English Literature, Biology and Chemistry. Then we add the score for all
of the subjects together, and send it to each university with our application. If
the score is good enough, we can get in!
So it seems to me that that makes it easier to get into an Australian university.
It is often said that Japanese students go through
“Exam Hell” to get into
Japanese universities, but I heard that now it is much easier to enter a Japanese
university.
I hope you enjoyed learning about Australian schools.
Oo-roo (see you) until next time!
